Weekend progess

Friday night I greenstuffed my Daemon Prince along his gaps.
Saturday I spent the day modeling. I pinned the arms to my DP and greenstuffed him, built the base, added more greenstuff to the rhino, I think it's done. and tried out a couple more ideas for paint schemes.
Sunday I sealed the flocking on my daemon prince base (cork, plasticard tubing, and basing material [sand]).
Tonight I will pin his head and prime him and his base (seperate).

Still waiting on those catachan flamer backpacks from JC. Once I have them i can finish modeling the Plague Marines in progress.
My ork capital ships fell Friday morning and broke. I will have to glue them back together :(
Listening to podcasts really is getting me in the mood to play (especially 5th edition). I'm listening to 40k Radio, The D6 Generation, and This Week In Wargaming
I absolutely love the new washes. Really making some nice-easy work for me.

5th Edition

Listening to the new podcast The D6 Generation episode 9. They speak with Yakface from DakkaDakka about the 5th Edition rulebook they've had time to look over.

I'm really excited! I thought I would have major issues with a 5th edition after just buying the 4th edition rulebook 2 years ago. The new assault rules sound great with protracted melees being a rare occurrence. I see the Orks as being a powerful force in this new edition, slamming into a unit 30 strong and tearing through it. I also see my Plague Marines as being amazing objective holders with cover saves all over the place and them just being plain BADASS to move off of an objective. Their rhinos will be more survivable running them all over the place.

I've been listening to a new podcast "The D6 Generation".
The hosts of it are big supporters of the Privateer Press games (to the point that the first couple of shows sound like "Why Russ Wakelin hates GW").
I tried a demo game with a guy at the Silver Dragon a couple months ago (sorry if I forgot your name, man) and enjoyed it, even though the guy demonstrating it with me was a douche and made a side comment at how 40K is brainless, I really like the mechanics of damage allocation and the focus but I'm not sold on the skirmish level of it.
I play (or try to) 40k because I like having squad A go hide behind that ruined building while squad B runs up the center to do whatever.

My other issue is that I am not sure my wallet can handle another miniatures game...hrm...

BFG Progress

Worked on the BFG fleet last night. Over the weekend I worked on my BFG fleet, I got my Brute Ramships all primed and got my Kill Kroozer and Terror Ship painted. I thought I needed some more detail on those two so last night I went ahead and added some more detail to them with checks on the tail of the Terror ship. I added a white stripe to the underside of the bow of the Kill Kroozer to have dags or more checks. The ships are almost solid colors with metallic weapons and launch bays. The Terror ship is red, the Kill Kroozer is blue. I think the capital ships will be solid colors like this and my escorts will be more metallic with color highlights.

Naming the fleet:
In nautical lore it's bad luck to have an unnamed ship, so I wll be naming my ships.
Flagship - Hulk - will be named the "Waaagh!mato"
I am thinking of orkifying some other ship names for my fleet:
SS Minnow, Nautilus, Orca, Red October, Argo, Octopus,
Also orky words:
Dakka, Zap, Boom, Waaagh!, Grim, Gork, Mork

Minor work

So I'm still working on this stuff. What's on deck:
1.) Plague Wing - may be changed to Sons of Mortarion, thinking of changing up composition. Still modeling the basics, HQ, troops and such. Waiting on some Cadian flamer backpacks to mix into the rest (skull+crossbones=awesome).
1a.) Modling daemon prince, attached right leg yesterday, left leg going on tonight then going to greenstuff the holes and seal it better.
1b.) Rhino needs more greenstuff work, TBD.
1c.) Need another rhino.
2.) Battlefleet Gothic - Started painting my Ork BFG fleet. I like the look so-far, but the limited pallette is not quite right, i think i'll add in some more orky looks tonight, checks, dags, etc.
3.) Aeronautica Imperialis - I'm hooked and I haven't played on game yet. I'm trying to get some fellow gamers to place an order with me to Forgeworld and have the order shipped to one place so we can save on shipping. No luck yet, if I don't hear from them by 7/4 I'll place my order without them.

Sporadic posting.
Little work has been done on the army. I've got my Daemon prnce in the works, I've got my Rhino in the works, I've got a box of Chaos Space Marines which I haven't touched. I've got a fleet of Ork BFG ships in the works.

Just got wrapped up with World of Warcraft (see blog).

I have a houseguest until Tuesday 4/1, but after that I'm going to try to set a daily goal of spending 1 hour modeling/painting/whatever.

This army has not been abandoned.

Keep looking back for more progress.

Zombie Nurgle

I think possibly I will use zombies as Plaguebearers (lesser daemons) in my army as they can be fielded without taking up a slot.

I was reviewing an older post about mathhammer and my orks vs plague wing and was curious about what the new orks would do to plague marines.

Orks are now striking at +1I and +1S on the charge.
Still 2 base attacks, +1 for 2 hand weapons, +1 for charging.

1 Plague marine strikes 3 time on the charge @ I3 (1 base, +1 for 2 hand weapons, +1 for charging)
WS4 means 3 strikes @ 50% to hit = 1.5 hits
S4 means 50% to wound = .75 wounds
Ork 6+ save is 16% to save = .63 unsaved wounds
Meaning that 2 Plague Marines (46 points) are needed to kill 1 ork (6 points).

on the other hand...is a different set of fingers...

1 Ork strikes 4 times on the charge @ I3 (furious charge) (2 base, +1 for 2 hand weapons, +1 for charging)
WS4 means 4 strikes @ 50% to hit = 2 hits
S4 (Furious Charge) means he's wounding on 5's, 33% to wound = .66 wounds
Plague marine 3+ save means 33% chance to miss save = .22 unsaved wounds
4+ Feel No Pain then drops that 50% more to .11 wounds
Meaning 10 Orks (60 points) are needed to kill 1 Plague Marine (23 Points)

Rhino #1

I started on my first Rhino ever. It seems to be going smoother than my Leman Russ for my orks. I didn't foul up the tracks, however the floor of the vehicle almost got fouled up hardcore. i couldn't line-up the roof after attaching the floor and there were all sorts of gaps.

so i tore it apart and clipped off the four tabs on the floor to get it to fit. i fit in the wall between drivers and passengers and the roof and front panel. i rubber banded it together as i went to bed, there will need to be some conversion work on it, pustules, buboes, etc. i think it needs a nurgle icon on the front panel just below the viewing slits.

for paint, i think catachan green and rotting flesh will work well on it. some of my rust on the tracks.

New layout

So, as I stated before I was having a hard time with the HTML layout as i didn't want to hand-code all that bullsh*t like i did back in the day. So I went back to the xml layouts. I used the mot dumbed down layout i could find. got sick of looking at nothing last night so i changed it up, i googled "closeup fly" in google images and found the pic you see in the bottom right. then i googled "how to add a picture to the background blogger" and found the code i needed.

i'm much more happy with it now, granted it's not the HTML layout i used before (with that fly that looked so badass) but i can manage this one.

Paint tests

So I've been working on my paint tests since Silver Dragon has been sold out of Chaos models for a while now. I've been able to paint there and give advice and receive some as well.

My paint tests, as I posted these are the results of my test paints. i'm happy with the armour, not sure how i feel about the trim and not sure how i feel about the backpacks/guns, weapons. i am really unsure about the skin on the models whose heads show. this is tough because in my next wave of chaos space marines i convert i want to add some Zombie arms and make them look all rotten.

went back to the Dragon yesterday to paint some more. Met with the resident paint guru, Mike, who gave me some advice on the rust i was trying to paint.

Paint scheme for rust:
Watered down Fiery Orange 1:1
Drybrush Dark Flesh
Ink Wash Brown/Fiery Orange/Water 1:1:3
Drybrush Tin Bitz

For Armour Edging:
Bestial Brown
Snakebite Leather
Graveyard Earth

Mike also wanted me to try for the "glowing eye" effect. I tried it on a couple of models. I'm not that good. but here's the progression:
Drybrush Dark Angels Green - this goes out the furthest, touching armour, weapons, shoulder pads, etc.
Drybrush Goblin Green - this comes in a bit, leaving the Dark Angels Showing
Drybrush Scorpion Green - This comes in even further
Drybrush Skull White - The tightest, this should only be in the eye and around the socket of the helmet.

I need a lot more practice and perhaps a better brush.

So i've decided on a paint scheme for my plague wing.

the store i'm using now, Silver Dragon Square sold out of Chaos models a few weeks ago and has not been able to get a new shipment of GW stuff. In the mean time i've considered an Eldar Saim Hann army and a Dark Angels Deathwing army because he has the models in stock...gah! But methinks my wife would kill me for that.

i resorted to buying a 7 man unit of chaos bikers from ebay (7 models retail for $15 each, paid $39.99 shipped) they will probably only be used for BIG games (more than 1500 points)

well yesterday at the Dragon, I went to paint and play WOW TCG. i sat down with my metal plague marines (hate those models) and devised a paint scheme for my Plague Wing.

So, i've been ignoring my blog and my army for the holidaze.

1.) A new store has opened to compete with Sunshine. the owner is not as creepy. the store is bigger (yay! no more rubbing butts!)
2.) i've come to a conclusion with my Plague Wing army: i will be modelling the army then paint all at once.
3.) i think i want to have Typhus as my HQ for bigger games (even though I have an aversion to special characters)

Ok, so I can officially say that my first 10 plague marines are modeled.

after seeing Davicious Prime's models onB&C i had to go back and add some nurgle iconography to my models.

I got my inspiration from his GS work here.

Again, crappy lighting = crappy pictures. Sorry. Someday i'll be able to shoot in daylight with a lightbox...

once i paint them the GS work should stand out a bit better...

So I thought I had my army all set, had all my units ok and chosen. then I re-read and crunched numbers and stuff on my army.

Now I'm torn...

Do i run a plague wing theme-y or do i run plague wing competitive?
do I run the Terminators with Icon of Nurgle (+1T) or Icon of Tzeentch (+1Inv)
or do i have both options depending on my opponent?

The idea crossed me that, what do you shoot at a Terminator? one does not shoot a terminator with a bolter or bolt pistol. one shoots a terminator with your best armour piercing item you have in order to negate the terminator 2+ armour save.
that means, Plasma and autokill weapons.
Plasma @ S7 will negate my armour save no matter which choice i make due to it's AP. with icon of nurgle he still needs to roll 3s to deal a wound (t5) and i get a 5+Inv for termy armour.
with icon of tzeentch he still needs to roll 3s (t4) to wound and it still idnores my armour save but instead of a 33% chance to make my invulerable save i have a 50% +(4+inv) invulnerable save. negating 16% of wounds due to plasma.

+with Lascannons (S9, AP1 or 2, i forget) instakill on Tzeentch, but they still get their 4+inv. Not instakill on Nurgle, but wound on a 2 with no armour save.
+Icon of Tzeentch is 35 points for a unit instead of 40 for Nurgle.

Those are the benefits.

Now the detriments
-it's not nurgle, which makes it not plague wing.
-it's blue :(
-it's really un-fluffy Tzeentch hopes to change his followers while Nurgle wishes to keep them the same.

Now again, I can model and paint up both units of termies and use one in more serious games and one in friendly games. I can model the Tzeentch termies as starting Nurgle corruption showing that nurgle wins, but Tzeentch is still struggling

looks like he used a zombie arm on one model to show it without the armour. painted the fingers black and skin a dead-pale color. love-it!

Makes me think a bit more about my marines. he has a shoulder pad with a *chunk* taken out of it and a piece of msh beneath. awesome idea.
he's got more damage on his armour, looks more "melted".

i still need one box of marines and one box of terminators. will make some of them more damaged. probably before i take them off the sprue or shortly thereafter. the only problem with doing the damage then is knowing where it will end up when the model is assembled...

I was thinking of using the Icon of Chaos Glory from the Chaos Space Marines box and modelling a triangle of greenstuff to look like hives or pustules over it. similar to the ones used here on the shoulder pad:

So, in my drive to work this morning I got to thinking. how would my orks fare against my new plague wing.
SO i thought up the following scenario:

how many basic troops would it take to drop a single model of the opposite army?

So I used Slugga Boyz vs. Plague Marines.
1st up Plague Marines charging a Slugga Boy.
Plague Marine gets 2 swings on the charge and with a higher initiative. 50% of those will hit making 1 hit.
with that 1 hit we have 50% chance to wound making for 0.5 wounds.
with their measely save 16% of those wounds will be saved for a remainder of 0.41 kills.
by that we know that we would need 3 Plague Marines (5 swings) to drop one Ork in one round of close combat. Making 69 points to kill 9 points of orks.

On the flip side:

Orks get to double their initiative with Power of the Waaagh! to 4 on the charge. two attacks base +1 for the charge, +1 for the 2nd cc weapon. however, Plague Marines have blight grenades which negate the charging bonus.
1 Ork gets 3 attacks @ 50% to hit = 1.5 hits
1.5 hits @ 33% to wound = 0.50 wounds
0.50 wounds@ 33% chance to miss the armour save = 0.16 missed saves
0.16 missed saves @ 50% chance on Feel No pain = 0.08 kills.
From this we can determine that we need 36 Ork hits to kill one Plague Marine. This comes to 12 Orks (108 points) to kill 23 points of Plague Marines.

What this works out to is you need 11.99 points of Orks to kill one point of Plague Marines while you only need 2.39 points of Plague Marines to kill one point of Orks

Plague Wing Progress

The unit of Chaos Space Marines I had purchased have been modeled.
I scored cracks in their armour, drilled small holes to represent bolter shots and took out chunks of the armour around the bolter holes with my xacto.

then i learned how to work greenstuff. (albeit beginner-style) i've put at least 2 areas of festering wounds on each plague marine. and (imo) they look GOOD. pictures are forthcoming, was just too damn tired last nght.

last nights work consisted of greenstuffing the termies to make them look good 'n' Nurgly. again, came out as well as the Plague Marines

i'm out of superglue so will pick some up in the near future. when I do i will be able to use the guitar string as hoses (poking out of the helmet and armour)

Plaguewing Update

1st off: I worked the Warlords of Miami 1500 point RTT this weekend. Had fun, checking out armies (not a fan of Blue Table's painting, waaay too $$ for way too little work).
I picked up a box o' termies to work on my plague wing. i also picked up some guitar string and sculpting tools. i will be using the guitar string on the termies to make them more "nurgly" and the sculpting tools will be used to enhance my Greenstuff skills.

2nd I'm looking at bringing my Plaguewing list up to 1500 points and i'm at a loss as to what to add:
2 more termy squads2 more plague marine squads1 plage marine squad + 1 termy squad
Termies:
+ Badass looking
+ Deep Striking
+ Reaper Autocannons
- $ Expensive (5 for $50)
- Point expensive

Plague Marines:
+ Rhinos
+ Plasma guns are less lethal
+ Feel No Pain
+ Fearless
+ $ Cheap ($35 for 10)
- Not Plaguewing

Basically if i add 2 termy squads i need to decrease the squad size of the plague marines. this would compromise one of my rules in building the list: 7 models to a unit
however, 2 plague marine units would mean i've got 4 plague marines and one unit of termies. thus i don't think i could call it a "plague wing" at that point.
one unit of each would then give me 3 plague marines (good at holding objectives) and 2 termies, good, but i think it could be done better.

I like the thought of deep striking 3 units of termies, but i'm not guaranteed to get them all at once, which sucks. and piecemeal i may as well just serve them up on a plate. Not a lot of experience on the subject between my playgroup and people online, but fielding the question anyways.
Perhaps i'll add uints after the "base" plaguewing is done that aren't as "plaguewing-y" maybe obliterators and stuff.

side thought: an apocalypse game with the plague wing:
3 units of termies
3-4 units of plague marines in rhinos
1 daemon prince w/wings
1 chaos sorcerer in termy armour
1 chaos Drednaught (heavy?)
2 3 man teams of obliterators

Plague Marines -
+ Make dead hard objective holders.
+ In cover with 3+ armour saves. being assaulted means striking @ I10 and the opponent loses the charging bonus attacks due to Blight Grenades.
+ T5 means MEQs wound on 5's. (33% chance to wound)

Rhinos -
+ Move footslogging plague marines up the board

Terminators -
+ Deep strike off of plague marines icons
+ provide close support to plague marines
+ T5 again means 33% to hit from MEQs
+ 2+ armout save means 10.89% dead termies (9.1827 hits = 1 kill)

Daemon Prince -
+ Not insta-killable
+ Strength + 2D6 armour penetration
+ Wings allow it to keep up with the rhinos
+ Psychic power - Wind of Chaos to kill masses of enemies shooting-style. May use Nurgle's Rot instead as the DP will most likely be in hand-to-hand and kill as many enemy as possible.

Basically, roll the rhinos up to an objective and "camp" it. Unload plague marines then deep strike the termies in the area. Termies provide close support and some assault punches. Daemon prince to tie up squads (squishy-squishy) who may be too much for my Plague Marines and Termies to handle. Essentially "turtling" on the objective while the enemy comes to me.

also gotta get myself a sculpting tool in order to sculpt the greenstuff for boils and sores and stuff.
once that stuff is on they'll be done. i've got 10 of my 14 Plague Marines modeled.

Bought a box 'o' Plague Marines a week or so ago. The package says "multipart metal and plastic miniatures". When they say "plastic and metal" they mean that the base is plastic. oh, the backpack is plastic as well.

i hate metal minis. a.) they have to be pinned. b.) you have to use super glue. c.) they're fragile. d.) they're hard to convert. e.) they have gaps which need filling.

so, needless to say, i built them. some of the scuplts are okay, but they're a bitch to convert and i didn't have the patience to pin them all. so i think they'll be my paint tests.

Saturday i bought a box of chaos space marines. 10 marines. the plastic ones. i love 'em. ised my pin vise and xacto to put holes in the armour. think i'll get a sculpting tool next pay period and greenstuff some boils and sores onto them.

then to the paint shop. gonna be primed white then painted camo green. metal will be done boltgun any boils and sores should be pink or purple, skulls and horns bleached bone. then to tha dip! minwax polyshades walnut stain. this should give a good shading to the model. then perhaps a layer or two of highlights.

to do list:
finish modelling

buy camo green (2 pots?)

Bored Orks

So I think my lack of progress on my Orks is because I think I’m bored of all things Orky. I await the new ‘dex. Hopefully a little more life can be put into them. I will set aside my green tide for the time being. Including my project Trukk replacement.

I think I need to try a model-light army which is why I’m going with Chaos.

I have bought my first box of Plague Marines. I have started my PlagueWing.
I have decided that I do not like the look and options of the Plague Marines. I will be building my plague marines out of Chaos Space marines with some GreenStuff’ing of boils and such. Would like the champions to have a horn coming out of a random place.

My pin vice will be hard at work putting holes in armour. My Xacto will be dulled by putting gouges in the armour.

My Plague Marines I have will be my paint tests. I plan on dipping them. So the paint plan will be:
Spray White
Spray Green (camo-green) basecoat
Paint armour, flesh, etc.
Dip in Minwax Polyshades Walnut stain
1-2 highlight layers
Base (use poppy seeds inked black as bugs).

went to the local store, Joel's, to purchase a box of Chaos Space Marines that I could convert into hard-ass Plague Marines to begin my Plaguewing army. unfortunately...as luck would have it...Joel didn't have any...figures. so i bought a box of metal plague marines.

i hate 'em.

i think they're going to be paint proofs. prime and undercoat them then dip 'em. being metal i was going to pin them but then thought of pinning the entire army, and said "fuck it".

either going to wait till israel's store is open to purchase more of my plaguewing or use Neal at the Warstore.

Revision to Plaguewing

So some holes have been punched in my previous list, but that's good! I asked for constructive criticism in order to help make a more fun and competitive list.
points of note:
1.) bikers too vulnerable. my fix for this was taking raptors @ 5 to a squad, but that would have been in the same boat after 2 kills. then the idea dawned to drop them altogether! loosening up 150 points for elsewhere. and it kept me a bit fluffier as i now wouldn't have a squad of 3 in an army made up of 7's.
2.) Lord wasn't right for the army. i looked back in the codex and read up on sorcerers and saemon princes and i think a DP will work better in the army. although more points than the lord, i think he'll be more effective as i can deep strike him if i like, he can't be instakilled, toughness 6 means it'll take a lot to kill him. also means that he can take out tanks and non-fearless units have to test to get into CC with him.
3.) Plague Marines were too vulnerable. It was suggested to give them rhinos. so i did, and they're super cheap!
3.) Not enough anti-tank. so i added some meltas and stuff.

I've been toying with the idea of a Chaos 2nd army for a while now and really like the Deathwing SM army, but don't want to play SM.
I drew up a quick list of what I would need for a PlagueWing army:
1.) Termies
2.) Delivery system (Chosen, Raptors or Bikers)
3.) Nurgle on everything (it's not ChaosWing, it's PlagueWing!)
4.) Keep unit sizes at 7 (keep it somewhat fluffy, not a HARD requirement)

With those parameters I drew up the following 1,000 Point list:

Issues raised with this list:
1.) Bikers are too vulnerable. With only 3 of them if one dies they *may* run.
2.) Not enough delivery systems. Only icon is the bikers.
3.) Basic troops not defended enough. Was suggested to bring rhinos for each Plague marine squad in order to work as mobile terrain and get them in range faster.
4.) Termies need upgrades. I know a reaper autocannon would be nice, but can't squeeze it in points-wise.

Possible fixes:
1.) drop termy squad to 4 or 5, freeing up points for upgrades of termies and rhinos.
2.) change 3 bikers (who will be testing after the first kill) to 5 raptors with an icon who will have to take 2 kills before a test is needed.
3.) specialize termies. not sure how, close combat or shooty? one would say that a CC termy would really benefit from his 2+ save, but a shooty termy would benefit from being able to move + shoot heavy weaps.

Death Guard/Plague Wing

Again, I still think a Plague Wing would be possible (if hard to play) at 1000 points. Got the new codex and will toss around numbers tonight.

I had read on one person's army blog that he had used poppy seeds as basing material as a swarm of bugs. inked black and gloss coated.

Thoughts on PlagueWing

Thoughts on a PlagueWing army...
Basically a unit or 2 (in big games) of bikers with homing beacons (or chosen with beacons infiltrating) which can call forth the Nurgle icon'd Terminators. There would be some Nurgle and/or plague marines as well as some sort of HQ. POSSIBLY a rhino, but most likely footsloggers, however footsloggers would not fit well into the army and wouldn’t make a lot of sense.

My question is this: would deep striking and biker Nurgle troops be SUPER cheesy? I know you said in a game we had played that they don't generally use transports or fast attack, but with the new codex would it be conceivable that while not Death Guard, they could be a Nurgle worshipping chapter who happens to use those elements?

So with that said army concepts:
1.) Fast deployment of 2+ squads of Terminators
2.) All squads are marked by Nurgle
3.) If infiltrating homing beacon, then footslogging troops
4.) If biking beacon, then transport troops (Rhino)

Infiltrating the homing beacons:
+ Cheaper, points-wise, more models on the table.
+ Slower moving (walking troops up the field)
+ Heavy weapons available close to target

Biking the homing beacons:
+ Fast
+ REALLY cool looking models
+ Low model count = lower financial commitment
+ Possible late game objective grabbers

Thought of the day:
still considering a 2nd army, even with the new orks coming out. still thinking along the lines of Chaos as I think that in small numbers they still pack a punch and aren't as mainstream as space marines.
addition to those thoughts are the idea of a Nurgle-marked army playing as Plaguewing. A unit of bikes with a homer beacon racing up the battlefield to dump a unit of Nurgle Termies in front of the enemy. The bikers getting stuck in all the while the basic nurgle troops walking up the field.

+awesome models
+T6 Bikes?!?!?!
+fun to play

Chaos Neutered, Orks Living Large

So i've seen (what I hope to be) pretty reliable leaks of the Chaos and Ork codices.

The new Chaos codex really turned me off of playing chaos. Vanilla-fy's what is a really cool army.

The new Ork codex, takes some of my favorite stuff out, but puts in a bunch more. example: Orks lose Choppas. but they also are 3pts cheaper and gain Furious Assault (+1S +1A on charge). I haven't heard any rumors about a change in the ork stat line (good and bad). i had seen that grots could get their BS pushed up to 3, which would be inconsistent with fluff, orks should be better or equal BS with Grots.
hoping they don't take the ork base 2 attacks Strength 4 would be nice, but i've lived with S3 for 5 years now, so not expecting much in that.

thinking the Furious Assault adds 1 attack and strength on charge stacks with the +1 attack for assaulting and +1 for 2 CC weapons.

I picked up some "textured" paint @ michael's yesterday and tested it out on a pice of scrap foamboard and then after it dried i went ahead and primed it black. it gives a great texture (particles aren't too big). it takes a primer well. i haven't tried drybrushing over it, but i think it won't be a problem as the texture looks like it's gonna hold real nice.

on deck for the piece:

battle damage, wear and tear (bullet holes, blasts, etc)
finish my crater:
chop down and un-even the rim, round out the bottom, sand and rubble the outside and glue it to the base.

More progress on the terrain, built a bomb crater last night. Posted to The Waaagh! where i got the advice to chop down the rim a bit and uneven it. also to round out the bottom. i thought perhaps the crater may have been a bit big, but i was assured that it looked good in the model.

picked up some textured spray paint in order to texture the walls.

hopefully i will have it ready for next game club night.

Gaming Club and Terrain

So Friday night a group from Sunshine got together outside of Sunshine and played at a new place. Was a little warm to start, but after the sun went down we were much more comfortable. the AC should be fixed before soon which should alleviate some of this.

in moving venues we will not have access to Joel's terrain. we made do Friday with sheets of paper (being blown around by the fans circulating the one AC's cold air) with RUINS, HILL, FOREST printed on them. so I thought it would be cool to build some terrain to (hopefully) get some other people into building it for the group.

I think I want a blast crater in the center of the building in order to explain why the building is in shambles. thought about sandbags too a la' the Forgeworld piece Rudy did, but i think i would be over modeling it at that point. and i would like to add more terrain to our group.

FYI, at the moment it is all built from 1/4" foamboard.

Wartrukk progress

well, a little progress on the wartrukk, last night i took Kr00za's (from the waaagh) advice and chopped down the length. got a little scared that i was ruining the model about 1/2way through when some of the glue that held it together started to fail. then i realized i paid less then $5 for the model. and all i would be losing out on would be a couple hours i've put into modeling it thus far.

So i cut out the rear wheel well. will have to cut a chunk out of th fender when i get the tracks on the back. not sure if i want to do track guards for them, not very orky. have been thinking about what to do to make it look worky when i do put the tracks on, what do i use for an axle, etc. and i remembered my damned box 'o' pens i bought. a pen barrel will make a great axle and spacers for the tracks!

Biker Boyz

I'm not sure how I feel about adding bikes to my Ork army. There are definitely other, more important things I think I need to add, but, I like the idea of orks on bikes FULL 'O' DAKKA.

Then I remembered, the owner of the sotre I used to play @ in NH drove a motorcycle that looked like a WWII German military bike with the sidecar. that would be a great centerpiece for a unit of ork bikers with an ork in the sidecar with an awe inspiring DAKKAlicious gun strapped to the sidecar.

So far I've got two consecutive losses with the new adjusted 750 point list. Too much armour penetration in it and not enough rounds going downrange. I think it's time to turn back to the original 750 points list or adjust this list to include more dakka. perhaps lowering the number of boyz in order to fit in another killer kan and arming both with big shootas.

still want to keep the wartrukk with 9 boyz as-is and included in the list. the burst of speed and 21" assault is amazing to catch people off guard. perhaps in 750 points dropping from 20 man strong squads to 15 each, saving 90 points. if i drop 90 points of boyz for 2 more kans i can march up behind the kans and not necessitate the extra ablative wounds needed for walking up the field.

We played alpha level take and hold (the one with only the center objective). When he was setting up, I realized that I was way outnumbered and prepared for a MEQ army with all my armour penetration (rokkits all around) and *not* a swarmy army.

Took out his warrior unit quick enough, and he smashed my kan to pieces (this list I think needs another, prolly drop some boyz for it). The unit who smacked down the warriors (including my Warboss) got shot to hell and failed the morale test then the mob check, they ran and mobbed up with the unit dancing with the hive tyrant and a unit of gaunts.

When push came to shove I was down to one unit of boyz who had killed the gaunts and were finishing up on the hive tyrant. A unit below ½ strength who had been shot to hell and assaulted by gaunts and fought them off bravely. I realized that I would have one unit capable of capturing the objective, where he had 3-5. There was no way I could have laid them all out in one turn to at least pull the draw and I conceded.

Conclusion:
I am happy how my warboss handled the winged warriors. I wish he had gotten into hth with the hive tyrant, but, meh, next time. I am not used to playing for objectives or I would have dumped all my boyz up on it and let them come to me. I may consider a unit of shoota boyz as a defensive gun line.

I finally made some progress on my army. I haveprimed 2 more boyz w/rokkits, both kans are primed, and my Russ is primed and began painted.

i've primed it black, drybrushed it boltgun metal, drybushed mythril silver, bullet holes gone over in black and touched up in mythril. same with scratches. glyphs done in yellow and white. need to get a new pot of blood red to finish. not sure if i wanna add camouflage or just dags. prolly just the dags.

7/24/07 Waaagh! Grimdakka vs. Eldar 750 pts

Played a modified version of my 750 point list. Was looking for more armour penetration as the last 750pt game ended badly as I couldn't pop his SMurfs.

as my opponent was just returning to 40k we chose to play an old school "cleanse" mission for victory points. not the 4th edition version with board quarters and such (perhaps i would have come out better if we had).

Turn 1 - attached my warboss to my trukkboy mob in the trukk. I ran the trukk behind what i had hoped was some good cover marched the boyz forward. the kan screening a unit of boyz (my rokkit boyz poking around from the sides of the kan.
he jumped his tank around cover and popped my trukk. (this would put the monkey in my strategic wrench). i made all my saves on my boyz and my warboss.

Fast forward, i made both of his guardian squads flee off the board, but not without taking numerous shooting casualties. his falcon took many hits and stunned his cred for about 1/2 the game, but could not penetrate it.

Conclusion: i needed to get into cc faster. i should have moved my boyz behind the killer kan further left and screened my trukk behind them from the falcon, this way i would have been able to overrun his gun line sooner and avoid more shooting casualties.

I am now two months without playing. as such I am two months without progress on painting. I've got a unit of Stormboyz assembled on my computer desk, waiting for a coat of primer. I have a Nob mostly built there two with a partial power klaw in my box-'o'-goodies. need to get more plastic glue.

and a BFG fleet.

time is minimal.

waiting for my 60Gb HDD's to be shipped from NH so I can load XP on one and Linux in the other. When I get the 160Gb back from Maritza I'll use it as a data disk. (mp3s, files, etc.)

so since my last few posts i'v made absolutely nil progress. in my defense I'm getting married in a month and am kind of swamped between both jobs as well. haven't played in three weeks also.

however...

in other news, i'm still thinking a badass army of word bearers would suit me well. lower model count than my orks. and still fun to play with using a daemon bomb.

in other, other news, i'm also reconsidering a Battlefleet Gothic fleet to support my army(ies). an ork fleet would be fitting for me, but also a Chaos fleet would go well with my new army. the orks would have more bits to work with for custom ships. dunno at this point, not sure if there are any players. I've emailed Rudy and Chuck from Sunshine to see if they'd be interested but they both have issues with taking up a whole new game. i don't see the difference in taking up a whole new game (whose rule books are completely free online) vs. taking up a new army which require a purchase of more models (more models are required for a 40k army as opposed to a similar point level of BFG) and a new rulebook for the new army. a 40k army would take more time to build, convert and paint than a BFG fleet. the system is different to that of 40k, but yet it still shares quite a few similarities that someone coming from 40k to it would not be completely lost.

i don't know, i guess you can lead a horse to water.

after a few messaged passed back and forth on a couple of message boards, I think Lustwing will not be viable in the points limits the store is playing at. At 750 points, a unit of 6 terminators would take up 1/3 of my army. putting a Luitenant or Lord with them, then units of Daemons and weapons, i would be well past the 750 point mark very fast and wouldn't have the staying power necessary at that size model count. Bikers cost about the same. with the same issues.

however, I can still fall back on the Word Bearers.

+ They can still perform the Daemon bomb very effectively. (loads of troops slots)
+ They can still use bikes to get summoners to a forward position
+ Less point heavy (14 point Marine +1pt mark of Chaos Undivided vs. 14pt marine +5pt mark os Slaanesh))
+ Can be converted to ZealotWing for high point games (termies still dropping, bikes still zooming, daemons still popping in from the ether)
+ Easier to paint than the pink.
+ Can use Bloodletters
- No Sonic Weapons (although i was never sold on these or the looks of Noise Marines)
- No modifier to enemy's initiative means striking at initiative mostly.
- No bonus for summoning

So at 750 points i know I will be a lot more viable as a DaemonBomb, and i can change it up to emulate ZealWing at higher point value games.
Maybe some other time.

So I've come across variants of the Emporer's Children which I think will suit my tastes well.

It's Fast: Bikers
It's Mean: Termies
It's Fun: Summoning and Deepstriking Daemons and Termies respectively
It's Cheap(ish): Higher points per model = lower model count = less to buy

It's called Lustwing. Generally Lustwing is based off of the Dark Angels Deathwing armies.I would have my Lustwing emulate both the Deathwing *and* the Ravenwing.
In Deathwing armies Terminators are Troops choices and there end up being a lot more than normal. Chaos does not have the availability in their lists to field that many termies but it can be emulated...
Ravenwing are a fast-attack army with bikes and land speeders. As chaos also does not have access to land speeders, I would be forced to leave those out as well, however this can be compensated for.

The idea of a mech-infantry army is still on the table, just changed somewhat. The idea has evolved thus:

Units of fast bikers, turbo boost up behind cover near the enemy, out of charge range. Each unit has a teleport homer and icon. 2nd turn, close in with the enemy 12", summon daemons, drop termies (if possible), charge with bikes and anything else in range.

Points of issue:
1.) Tanks - i would have very little tank-hunting ability unless i give my termies or bikes meltas
2.) Points - at the store I play, they lower points to 750/500. This is coming out harder to build to than with the orks.

Also, I am not sure as to the legion I want to use for this. Word Bearers would allow me to field Bloodletters (fun!) which would allow me to slice n dice through MEQ's (so I'm told). Yet Emporer's Children give my enemy -1 to their initiative allowing me to strike first in CC almost every time.
Also, unsure as to whether or not to make termies multi-role or unit specific. with the 2+ armour save and striking at an effective I5 is tempting to make them CC exclusively. However this would limit my tank hunting to my Bikers. Arming 2 bikers with Meltas and keeping them out of the fray in order to harass and destroy vehicles (with uber-mobility) would be a good job for them, perhaps a small unit or two set up for this? (3 bikes, 2 meltas, no Aspiring Champion).

Thinking now this would be my tentative Lustwing list (unsure as to point totals)
HQ - Luitenant (termie or biker, unsure, think perhaps the extra attacks in Close Combat would be a good thing to have, but will the termies be CC?) keep him cheap. (if termie, give unit of chosen termies) at higher point values would like to trick out luitenant or upgrade to lord.
Elite - Termies (close combat, Lit claws)
Troops - Daemonettes x6
Troops - Daemonettes x6 (maybe a unit or two more)
Fast - Bikers x6 (icon, aspiring champ, teleport homer)
Fast - Bikers x6 (icon, aspiring champ, teleport homer)
Fast - Bikers x3 (meltas x2)

I think my chaos obsession has laid waste to my Ork progress. I had read on a blog http://paintingthousandsons.blogspot.com that painting for 5 minutes a day will work, but in order to do that I would need a dedicated workspace. I think if I were to get a laptop I could take over my computer desk as just a warhammer workspace, however, financially, this is not in the cards, so I will have to come up with another solution. I think perhaps, keeping the models I need to work on out, along with my modelling/painting toolbox easier access I will be more apt to spend a few minutes on it a day.

to work on:
need to finish modelling the commander in my tank.
also, finish modelling the buggy driver and gunner and get them primed.

baby steps.

To buy models from my local store for $25 for a box of 8 Chaos Space Marines (he does give a 10% discount). OR To buy a lot of Chaos Space Marines 25 assembled and primed for $25. Saving $2 per model.
While saving $2 per model is nice, removing the profit from the store (the *only* one in the area) removes the owners reason to be there. No store=no place to play. I know one person will not shut down a store, but there are more than one of us. The next closest shop is an hour+ away from the house.

i've been thinking of starting Chaos as a second army. a.) lower model count as more points per model. b.) less necessary to convert models=more playing time

So i've been toying with the idea of a mechanized infantry as well. I dig the mechanized tau force jumping out and shooting the hell out of you but i've come to the conclusion that i hate the crisis suits models. so i looked around at other possibilities for mech-inf.

1.) sisters of battle - jump out of rhino, flame, lather, rinse repeat. great models, but a lot more painting than i'm prepared to do. also, the tactic with them feels a little one-dimensional
2.) tau - see above
3.) space marines - Blood angels - we already have 2 blood angels players.
4.) space marines - black templars - still a possibility, but looking really slim due to some of the conversion which i will need to do.
5.) eldar - hate the models. period.
6.) dark eldar - see above
7.) 'nids - no transport
8.) chaos - hrmmmm....
9.) IG - nope, too troop heavy and don't want an armoured company
10.) 'crons - nope, too cheezy

so i started looking into chaos tactics. the one that drew my attention is the Daemon Bomb where a unit or three get close to the enemy quickly then summan as many daemon units as possible, attack, enjoy. i thought hard about this and i see the "bomb" as being just a modified mechanized infantry tactic. the biggest difference is that there will not be moving cover and the "transport" won't be as easy to stop (in theory).

the theory to why the "transport" won't be as easy to stop:
a rhino can be popped and stopped in one shot. it would take a well placed pie plate to stop a unit of bikers or footsloggers.

so i toyed with the idea of an undivided Word Bearers legion. being able to take loads of daemons sounds great, especially for a daemon bomb. but in reality i am trying to avoid an outrageous number of models.

so now i'm thinking of a marked legion, mark of Slaanesh. the Emporer's Children
The planned list looks a little like this:

HQ: Lord on bike w/all the fixxins
HQ: Greater Daemon - Keeper of Secrets
Fast: Biker Boys x6 - icon, Aspiring champion w/daemonic chains
Fast: 2x Biker Boys x6 - icon, Aspiring champion loaded up
Troops: Daemonettes x6 (not sure how many units of these)
Elite: Chosen x6 or Obliterators x3 (i want to be able to deep strike thses guys)
Heavy: Havocs x6 - infiltrate, aspiring champion, icon, loaded for anti-tank
Heavy: Havocs x6 - infiltrate, aspiring champion, icon, loaded for anti-tank

so the tactic of this is to roll up the biker boyz as close as possible. 2nd turn pop the greater daemon and as many 'nettes as possible. swamp 'em and bob's your uncle.

Played last night vs Necrons. Made a big boo-boo in armour pen vs the 'lith. Instead of rolling 2D6 and choosing the highest I accidentally rolled Str+2D6. oops. as such i popped his 'lith. And scored a sh!tloat of victory points.
current record with Orks: 4Wins, 5 Losses, 0 Ties, 44.44% Win.

On the plate for 1500 point Ork force:

Picked up the Chaos codex. Really excited about starting the army. If I pick up a box it will delay the orks, but also if i get a box and assemble all the models it may put me in the mood to work on my orks more?

Want to have the orks finished for MOM, not sure if I will have time to do what I want to with the army. would like to have it all modelled and painted. would settle for all modelled.

2nd Army Ideas

After Orks are complete I'm thinking of a second army. In the event the winner is unable to fulfill her duties as Army the second will take her place...

I want to do a mechanized army, my ideas and suggestions from various forums include:
Mech Tau - do Mech well, but somewhat cheezy
Kult of Speed - do mech well, but i have an ork army
Sisters of Battle - would be fun to get all those flamers in close via rhino transport
Space Marines - Black Templars and Blood Angels bing my only options, Blood Angels are out as there's a BA player already.
IG - too model-heavy
Chaos - Access to rhinos, plus the Daemon Bomb!

I think at this point I'm gonna pick up the Chaos codex and read up on them. I LOVE the pic in the rulebook on pg. 128 showing the Word Bearer. almost definitely would go with a word-bearer daemon bombers. Bikes and rhino mounted marines, roll up, get out, pop the bomb. let the fun ensue.

Update on Leman Russ

been a couple of busy weeks. finally got a little time to model tonight. previously i boxed in the cannon and added a nice big barrel tip, (hard to see but there are dags on the tip of the cannon barrel), rivets, crosshairs on the cannon (just in case), etc. tonight i modeled my grot rigger(s) and a bayonet for the heavy bolter/big shoota sorry about the poor pix.

i'm aware that the bayonet looks like it's just hanging there. gonna strap it down with a little more plasticard or wire. the grot (i think Spluch is a good name) will be removed (currently poster-puttied) for painting. my fiancee remarked that the front and back need battle damage and armour plates as well. then modelling will be complete and on to the paint shop...

as far as painting goes...thinking basic metal look with some rust 'n' dust. checks and red dags where appropriate. the big armour plate on the right side of the turret will get something painted there (graffitti like) perhaps WAAAGH! or the like, maybe the warboss's name Don Grimdakka. not sure.

the sides of the barrel are another place where graffitti and the like can be put, not sure yet. perhaps just checks.

Thoughts on Orks and prolonged battle

Just did the math out. Without adding any additional reinforcements to a group of 10 orks (sluggas) vs. a unit of 10 MEQs the orks will lose in 5 rounds of combat (barring any morale breaks).

Points-wise, a standard marine is 6 points more expensive than a slugga (15points vs 9 points) so in 5 rounds of combat the orks will have removed 135 points of marines vs 90 points of orks. The 45 point difference will allow more bodies on the battlefield. If the units were equal in point cost say 15 sluggas vs a unit of 10 MEQs.

In 3 rounds of combat points-equal orks will (statistacally) kill a points-equal force of MEQs. This result does not take into account any sort of special weapons or characters (sergeants, etc.)

so , i picked up a Leman Russ the other day to convert for my Orks, i was so excited to work on it I muffed up the tracks, but that's ok i play Orks, any i'll orkify them. here's a pic to show my work thus far and my plans (mind the sitck figures)

they're gonna be in a word, unsubtle. there's plans for rivets for each track pad. still working on what to use for the battlecannon (aka, BIG BOOM!) the big shoota/heavy bolter on the front is a long ways away

next up, there's a list: the turret needs beefing up. it needs armour plates. i need to decide if I want to add the sponsons. engine, needs to be monstrous, with lots of worky bits. cannon needs to be beefed up (looks a little weedy) heavy bolter needs to be changed to a big shoota. but, what do ya think? those tracks took Spartacus and three episodes of Band of Brothers to complete.

got the modelling bug tonight after finishng my warboss and special weapons boyz last week. here's some more work on the russ. the engine has worky-bitz, the heavy bolter, well i tried to make a big shoota with two shoota barrels, but the pin between them was too short so i made a flash supressor out of some spare square tube i had lying around. it will look better painted. i *still* need to do something with the cannon barrel and the armour plates...

still plugging away at the russ... added some detail last night (the turret and cannon are still being pondered, heavily) i think I may completely cut apart the turret and widen it as with the tracks as they are now it looks a little weedy. in any event it will definitely be getting some armour plates to bulk it up a little. as far as additions last night: added dags on the tracks (i thought i wouldn't do this but i had 2 scrap triangles of plasticard laying on my table and when i put them on the tracks i caved. added armour plates to one side, with rivets on one plate, other rivets to be added soon. finished modelling the hull mounted big shoota/heavy bolter. dropped the fuel drum onto the back end made some more orky exhausts (yes i see the mould lines, they'll be filed off soon enough)

well, decided against widening the turret on this particular model. instead I slapped on super thick armour plates to bulk it up some. still unsure how to bulk up the remaining side of the turret. added remaining armour plates to other side of tank, along with battle damage. added glyph plates to sides as well. need to swing past Home Depot to get a length of PVC pipe in order to beef up that cannon. also have to come up with a way for an Ork to be commanding from the open hatch. here's some new pix:

Curreny hobby: knee deep in Warhammer 40k.

Working 2 jobs, one at Blockbuster video, then the real job at Preferred Care.

Thinking about movies i would show at BB (when i'm not supposed to), i thought i completely agree with George Carlin:
i would rather show an X rated movie to children than a movie full of blood, gore, and violence. a movie of people making love over people killing each other. that said, at work i am more apt to put on "Conan" (1 scene of "sex" where a woman is brought to Conan's cage after he wins a duel to the death) than i am to put on "Emmanuelle in Space" or "The Red Shoe Diaries". Wierd. my conformist is showing. sorry.

this week has been terrible for my 40k army. didn't get any modelling in. but i did come up with my 1500 point army list i will (assuming i can make it) be playing at Marines over Miami (http://www.rudypicardo.com/WH40kRTTforums).
my orks are coming along.

need to finish converting and paint drivers for the buggies and trukk.
need to finish and GS the nob on my computer desk so that he can be primed

ideas on the tactics of the army: the warboss will be attached to a trukkboyz mob. this way he'll see some fighting. both trukks will roll up supporting eachother with the buggies screening if needed. would like to be able to attack from a flank as there's more opportunity to consolidate into another unit, less chance being shot up on the way in, etc. buggies spout flamey-goodness at anything in range, tank shock if needed. the trukks blow their load onto the battlefield and the orks charge. stormies to be the 2nd wave. then the kan-shielded boyz will make up the third wave.

thoughts on other models, the other "trukk" could be a tracked-catipillar type bulldozer with a towed gas/water/milk tanker with flat tires a la "Tremors". the tanker would be cut in half so that the boyz could fit in.
